About the Sierra Leone club Of Columbus Ohio (SLCCO)

The SLCCO was incorporated in the state of Ohio in 1993 as a non-profit organization.

The SLCCO has received proclamations from the Governors of Ohio, the Ohio Secretary of State and the Mayor of Columbus, OH recognizing it activities in promoting the welfare of the Sierra Leone Community in Central Ohio.

Thanks to the efforts of the SLCCO, April 27, was declared in 2005 by former governor Taft as Sierra Leone’s day throughout the state of Ohio. This was also reaffirmed in 2007 by governor Strickland of Ohio.

The Sierra Leone national flag was flown at the Ohio state house on April 27, 2006, and 2007 respectively.

The former Vice President of Sierra Leone, Hon S.E Berewa and other High ranking government official as well as Sierra Leone Ambassadors to the US and UN have visited Ohio through the invitation of the Sierra Leone Club of Columbus Ohio.

Some key objectives for which the organization was created are to:

  • Promote the general welfare of the Sierra Leone community and their families, particularly in central Ohio.
  • Build bridges by fostering greater understanding and cooperation among members and between the organization and the American citizenry in general.
  • Encourage members to develop a greater appreciation for the democratic process and for tolerance of the diversity of opinion as is often evident among us.
  • Educate our communities in the cultural heritage of Sierra Leone.
  • Undertake a program of social and sporting activities for members and their families.
  • Assist in developing appropriate human resources in our native Sierra Leone by providing educational grants to students based on academic merit and the human resources needs of the Sierra Leone economy.
  • Enhance awareness of investment opportunities in Sierra Leone among the business community in the United States.
  • Serve as a community resource and cultural gatekeepers for new immigrants so as to facilitate their easing into their new home and life in the United States.
